World Health Organization Issues Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Less than one in 10 patients that would benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, warns the WHO as it issues its first recommendations on the medications.

Given over a billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is urging increased and just access to these injectable treatments.

Per projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be managed with holistic and ongoing care," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are key obstacles to universal availability to the jabs that can aid individuals in losing significant weight, explains the body.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Despite the present best projected scenario, the supply of these medications might only reach about 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline urges nations and manufacturers to widen availability, through measures including voluntary licensing.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

The injections mimick a biological compound to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and increase the sense of being full so people eat less.

Patients commonly see weight reduction within a few weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Studies points to people may regain a significant portion within a year of halting the drug, as their typical food cravings come back.

Being carrying excess weight increases your likelihood for contracting medical conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Obesity impacts individuals in all nations and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
